In a serious development, Israeli artillery targeted a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) infantry unit at 6:30 a.m. in the Sarda area, south of Khiam.
According to our correspondent, this attack was launched from a newly established Israeli occupation military position inside Lebanese territory at Tell al-Hamams.
UNIFIL confirmed the incident, stating in a press release that an Israeli Merkava tank opened fire on its personnel near a UN position inside Lebanese territory. The occupation force reported that heavy machine gun fire landed approximately five meters from a group of its soldiers, who were forced to take immediate cover for their safety.
This attack is a new violation of Lebanese sovereignty and of Security Council Resolution 1701, which regulates the work of UNIFIL forces in the south and obliges the Israeli side to stop any acts of aggression within Lebanese territory.
