An explosion took place in Syria’s Arab Gas Pipeline, between the Ad Dumayr and Adra areas of Damascus Governorate in the country’s south early on Monday, official SANA news agency reported.
The blast led to power outages across Syria, as power stations shut down one after another.
The explosion was a result of a terrorist act, the state news agency said on Twitter, citing information from the energy and electricity ministries.
“The firefighting and civil defense teams were able to completely extinguish the fire that broke out on the Arab gas pipeline between al-Dumair and Adraa areas, after it was subjected to a terrorist attack on Monday dawn,” the agency said.
Caretaker Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali Ghanem said that the explosion on the Arab gas pipeline resulted from a terrorist act, SANA reported.
After putting out the fire completely, immediately, technical inspections began on the pipeline to conduct maintenance and replace the damaged parts, the Syrian minister said, adding that in the coming hours, the power stations will be supplied with gas and the situation will return to what it used to be before the terrorist attack.
Commenting on the attack, US Special Envoy for Syria James Jeffrey says ISIL terrorist group (Daesh) likely behind attack on the pipeline.
