Iran’s Foreign Minister has publicly condemned his Polish counterpart for what he termed “meddlesome remarks,” escalating a diplomatic spat centered on allegations that Iran is supplying drones to Russia.
The sharp rebuke from Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi came directly on the social media platform X, written in Polish, targeting Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski. The exchange was triggered by Sikorski’s participation in an event at the UK Parliament that accused Iran of selling drones for use in Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Araghchi stated that he had previously invited Sikorski to a “substantive dialogue and exchange of documents” to clarify the facts. This invitation followed a display in the British Parliament of a drone wreckage, which was “falsely and maliciously attributed to Iran.”
“Avoiding responses, repeating baseless claims, and making meddlesome remarks will not solve the problem,” Araghchi asserted in his post.
Striking a historical chord, the Iranian diplomat reminded Poland of the deep ties between the two nations. He referenced Iran’s hospitality during World War II, when it provided shelter to over 100,000 Polish refugees and helped them form their own army.
“The friendship between the people of Iran and Poland was proven in challenging times, and it is our duty to protect this historical and cultural heritage,” Araghchi wrote. He added that the Iranian nation, rooted in a “glorious and significant past,” is determined to build a future of “progress and prosperity.”
On October 14, Sikorski participated in an anti-Iran presentation at the UK Parliament in cooperation with a US-Israeli-affiliated group, displaying the wreckage of what they claimed to be an Iranian-made drone used by Russia in its war in Ukraine.
Iran summoned Poland’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran to protest Sikorski’s involvement in the anti-Iran event.
