Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has said that his visit to Syria was a turning point in expanding relations and appreciating their resistance.
Upon his arrival in Tehran early on Friday, President Raisi said that after 12 years of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s support for Syria, his two-day visit to Arab country had great importance for the two countries and the region.
“Syria visit was a turning point in the expansion of economic, political, and security ties between Iran and Syria. It was also a way of appreciating the resistance of the Syrian people and government against the invaders,” Raisi was quoted as saying by Merh news agency.
Iran and Syria have good capacities and grounds for cooperation to improve economic ties, the Iranian president said.
Raisi also mentioned several topics discussed with his Syrian counterpart Bashar Al-Assad in Damascus several issues, mainly on finance and trade levels.
The two countries signed 15 axes of cooperation documents in the field of energy production and distribution, facilitating economic and trade cooperation with the establishment of a joint bank and insurance, the reduction of trade tariffs between the two countries, strengthening and expanding transit between Iran, Iraq, and Syria, reviving Syria’s agricultural, industrial and energy capacities after the war and facilitating pilgrimage trips between the two countries.
Joint Statement
At the end of the visit on Thursday, the two countries issued a joint statement stressing their resolve to expand bilateral relations and declaring their fight against common enemies.
The two presidents held in-depth talks that focused on ways to develop and strengthen bilateral relations based on fraternal and strategic relations between the two countries, as well as the latest developments in the region and global conditions, the statement read, the statement said.
The two sides stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations through the continuation of political, economic, and consular cooperation and other areas of cooperation, as well as the continuation of the exchange of high-ranking delegations between the two countries, according to the statement.
They also expressed their readiness and willingness to take any action to develop commercial-economic relations between the two countries through existing mechanisms such as the Joint High Commission. They also emphasized the existing bilateral cooperation in the field of reconstruction of the Syrian Arab Republic.
Assad Salutes Raisi before Departure
Raisi left Damascus for Tehran on Thursday night after the two-day official visit to Syria.
President Al-Assad saluted Raisi at the Damascus International Airport before departing to the Islamic Republic. The two presidents had a one-hour talk at the airport, a day after another four-hour meeting was held at the Presidential Palace.
