Head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the upper house of the Russian parliament, Konstantin Kosachev, said Monday the an opportunity to reach a peaceful agreement in Syria has been lost because of the US position, which lies in the administration’s insistence on defending the use of force.
“Russia has striven for continuing dialogue with the US on Syria until the last moment, and only our position was keeping the chance to launch a stable peace process alive,” he told RIA Novosti.
“This opportunity has been lost now, but not because of objective reasons, but because of the US obsession with a scenario of force scenario for personal reasons,” he added, expressing beliefs that Washington’s uncompromising stance is based “to a great extent on subjective factors linked with the current presidential election cycle.”
On September 9, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry announced a new peace plan to address the conflict in Syria. The ceasefire deal was later shattered by numerous violations by armed groups, which resulted in intensified fighting between the Syrian government and militants in Aleppo. The Syrian government later announced an end to the regime of truce.
