Clashes in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain Al-Hilweh had entered second week on Thursday.
Al-Manar correspondent in the southern coastal city of Sidon, where the refugee camp is located, reported that cautious calm prevailed on Thursday after clashes renewed afternoon on Wednesday and overnight till Thursday morning.
“Cautious calm prevails now after intense clashes yesterday and overnight during which heavy arms were used by the warring sides,” our correspondent reported.
8 people were killed and 24 others were injured between Wednesday and Thursday, raising the death toll of the clashes which erupted last Thursday reached 15 killed and 150 wounded.
National News Agency reported that the eastern highway that links the city to the country’s south has reopened to traffic following a morning of heavy clashes.
A ceasefire was repeatedly announced during the last week in Ain Al-Hilweh, with senior Lebanese and Palestinian officials holding two meetings. However, the truce has fallen apart, raising tensions in the camp which is home to nearly 100,000 Palestinian refugees.
Meanwhile on Thursday, Lebanese Army Commander General Joseph Aoun inspected the 1st Infantry Brigade deployed in Sidon and the vicinity of the Ain el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp.
He met with the officers and soldiers in Mohamad Zgheib Barracks.
For his part, Lebanese House Speaker Nabih Berri discussed the situation in Ain Al-Hilweh with Hamas politburo member Moussa Abu Marzouk.
Discussions at Berri’s Ain Al-Tineh residence touched on the latest developments in the refugee camp, according to the NNA.
