Some 150 Democratic members of the US’ House of Representatives put their signatures on a letter urging the presumptive US President-elect Joe Biden to reenter the 2015 Iran nuclear deal without seeking amendments.
The number is enough to give Biden a solid bulwark against Congressional efforts to prevent him from doing so, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported Wednesday
“We strongly endorse your call for Iran to return to strict compliance with the nuclear deal, the United States to rejoin the agreement, and subsequent follow-on negotiations,” said the letter which is now to be sent to Biden.
The intended effect of the letter is to reassure Biden, who was vice president under president Barack Obama when the deal was negotiated by the United States and others, that he can rejoin the agreement without fear of pushback, according to JTA.
The letter surpasses 146 names, the number needed to break the two-thirds majority that opponents of reentering the deal would need to override Biden’s veto of any legislation aimed at blocking reentry.
