Iranian forces have killed two suspected members of an armed group in a southeastern region and arrested five others, intelligence minister said, accusing Saudi Arabia of sponsoring terrorists in the country.
“A group of seven terrorists who wanted to attack a barracks in Chabahar (in Sistan Baluchistan province) was dismantled” on Wednesday, Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi said, quoted by the official news agency IRNA.
“Five people, including two nationals from a neighboring country, were arrested and two others were killed. Unfortunately, an intelligence agent was also killed,” he added.
Sistan-Baluchistan province, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, has seen repeated attacks by Takfiri militants against the security forces of Iran.
A second terrorist group was broken up in Iranian Kurdistan in the northwest, Alavi said, without elaborating.
“Saudi Arabia is sponsoring terrorist groups in Iran,” he said.
Last Wednesday, terrorists attacked the Iranian Parliament and the Mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, in the capital Tehran, killing as many as 17 people. The Takfiri terrorist group ISIL claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Last month, Saudi Deputy Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman said Saudi Arabia would work to move “the battle” to Iran. Also, on June 6, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said Iran had to be “punished” for what he called “its interference in the region.” The Tehran attacks were conducted hours later.
On Tuesday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif referred to those remarks by the Saudi officials and called them a “direct threat and very dangerous provocation” by Riyadh. He also said Iran had obtained intelligence showing that Saudi Arabia was “actively” propping up terrorist groups along Iranian eastern and western borders.
