Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, on Friday presided over the Lebanese Central Security Council’s meeting at the Grand Serail in presence of the country’s top security officials.
At the outset of the meeting, Mikati extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the three army martyrs, who fell yesterday in an operation in the Bekaa Valley.
“This security meeting was preceded by a financial one yesterday, as part of a series of meetings that will be held next week in order to take the required measures concerning the Lebanese Central Bank,” Mikati said.
In the wake of the meeting, Caretaker Interior Minister, Bassam Mawlawi said, “Today, the Central Security Council convened at the Grand Serail upon the PM’s request, and in his presence, to follow up on the country’s latest developments and security situation. (…) We do understand that the living conditions have become very difficult to bear, but citizens should be aware of the fact that riots and attacks against public property are never a solution; to the contrary, such acts may exacerbate the crisis and the scale of problems, destroy the country’s infrastructure, and harm citizens.”
Moreover, Mawlawi pointed out that “during the meeting, all security leaders were briefed on the available information on the nation’s security situation, and the repercussions of the events that are taking place, as well as on all the available information and plans that are being implemented to prevent security chaos on the ground.”
“We’re always keen to affirm that it is not in anyone’s interest to mix security with politics; we believe that political and social problems should not affect the security situation, which concerns all citizens,” Mawalwi added.
“The security situation is still acceptable, but it is still good, especially looking at the circumstances we are going through,” added Mawlawi.
