Russia has no reason to believe that the United States will be the first to switch to the principle of non-use of nuclear weapons, said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
“So far we do not have any information indicating that the movement has gone and has gone exactly in this direction.
Rather, the opposite is true, ”he said in a comment to RIA Novosti.
According to the Russian diplomat, Moscow saw a message about a dialogue between the United States and Europe, within the framework of which European NATO member states insisted on the current parameters of the “American nuclear umbrella.”
“We believe that inviolability also means the absence of any changes in the doctrine,” Ryabkov explained.
He added that there was no hint of this during the Donald Trump administration.
“All the signals that we have heard and that are accumulating, including studying the situation and analyzing what we have to work on, rather indicate the opposite – that the Americans have lowered the threshold for the use of their nuclear weapons,” the diplomat concluded.
Earlier, Politico, citing sources in the White House, reported that the national security team of US President Joe Biden will consider the conditions under which Washington can commit itself not to use nuclear weapons first.
