A senior adviser to the Iranian foreign minister for special political affairs called for an increase and acceleration in the transfer of international humanitarian aid to the country.
In a telephone conversation on Monday, Ali Asghar Khaji and the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen held talks on the situation in the Arab country and advancement of peace talks.
Khaji and Pedersen discussed political solutions to settle the Syria crisis as well as the need for the Syrian Constitutional Committee to move forward with its negotiations.
They agreed that the 6th Syrian Constitutional Committee must convene to advance talks to peacefully resolve the Syria crisis.
Opposing Western pressures and sanctions on the Syrian government, Khaji referred to the hardships that the Syrian people are facing due to the sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic and also called for efforts to increase humanitarian assistance for the Syrians and to speed up aid deliveries.
The UN Envoy, for his part, thanked Iran’s efforts to help end the Syria conflict.
Pederson also congratulated Khaji on the formation of the new Iranian administration and called for closer cooperation between the UN and Iran, including on efforts to resolve the Syria crisis.
