Syria has announced the closing of its main border crossing with Jordan, the Nassib-Jaber crossing, effective Tuesday, after Amman carried out strikes on the Syrian territory.

The Syrian General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs said in a statement that passenger and commercial traffic was suspended in both directions due to developments on the ground in Daraa province.

Jordan on Monday night carried out airstrikes against in Syria, saying the targets were armed groupsand that the strikes were in retaliation for Friday’s attack on a Greek Orthodox Church in the southern Jordanian city of Karak that killed nine people, the Jordanian air force said in a statement.

It said the operation “resulted in the killing and wounding of many members of these terrorist groups and the destruction of a number of their vehicles.” It did not specify who the groups were or the precise location of the strikes.

The operation sparked an outcry in Syria, where officials said the Jordanian operation killed eight civilians, including women and children, and injured several more.

Damascus criticized the action, claiming that the strikes were carried out without prior cooperation with Syrian authorities.

The Nassib crossing is an important commerce and transportation route between Syria and Jordan. Its closure is projected to cause disruptions in cross-border transportation, business activity, and travel between neighboring countries.
