A workshop recently organized by the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council under the title of “Security in the Eyes of Youth” has recommended a conscription bill for Arab young people, Saudi Okaz newspaper reported.
One month ago, imposing conscription in Saudi Arabia has been reconsidered through a new debate waged by Saudi bloggers on social media websites.
Saudis were divided into proponents who believe the bill is important for the kingdom amid the new international alliances and fundamental changes and opponents who believe there is no feasibility of traditional methods of recruiting amid today’s wars that rely on guerrilla hit-and-run style and infiltration, citing states that apply conscription but failed to achieve victories.
Earlier, specialized reports concluded that the kingdom, which seems it needs to impose conscription to boost its military strength, may not take such a step for being economically costly, given the current decline in oil revenues.
