Forty-year-old Khader Adnan, Palestinian prisoner and a victorious symbol of Palestinians’ determination to stand up for their rights against Israeli oppression, is reported to be in poor health.
Khader Adnan who has been on a hunger strike for more than 50 days in protest of his arbitrary detention, “suffers from serious health conditions characterized by severe weight loss, severe wasting and vomiting blood”, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club said.
Adnan, who has launched since 2004 a series of hunger strikes in Israeli prisons, one of which lasted 67 days, was rearrested by Zionists in December for being a member of the Islamic Jihad resistance group in the West Bank.
Since Adnan began his hunger strikes, Israeli authorities have imposed harsh measures, such as isolation, no visitations, and being transferred from one detention center to another.
“No one was allowed to visit him, neither a lawyer nor a human rights organisation. On day 31 of his hunger strike, the Red Cross visited him, and on day 37, he was transferred to Ramle hospital, where he is now,” his wife, Randa, told Middle East Eye.
“His face was pale and his beard and hair were long. They didn’t allow him to have a shower, change his clothes or trim his beard as a means of pressuring him to end his hunger strike,” she added.
“No doctor has been allowed to check on his health, but I could see that he lost half of his weight and that his hearing is weak.”
Adnan went through two major hunger strikes. One was a 66-day long hunger strike in 2012 and another 55-day long hunger strike in 2015, in protest against his administrative detention.
Adnan’s next hearing is scheduled for today.
