The Russian Ambassador to the US issued a strongly-worded threat after President Trump called out the Kremlin on Friday for failing to stop Syria’s alleged use of chemical weapons.
In a nationwide address on Friday night, Trump announced the US, along with the UK and France, would launch “precision airstrikes” in Syria.
Trump addressed Syria’s allies Iran and Russia directly and asked, “What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children? The nations of the world can be judged by the friends they keep.”
Trump then singled out Russian President Vladimir Putin and said, “Russia must decide if it will continue down this dark path or if it will join with civilized nations as a force for stability and peace.”
Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov responded hours later and pointed his finger squarely at the US with a statement that read, “The worst apprehensions have come true. Our warnings have been left unheard.”
“A pre-designed scenario is being implemented. Again, we are being threatened. We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences,” he said.
“All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris. Insulting the President of Russia is unacceptable and inadmissible,” the statement went on to say.
“The US — the possessor of the biggest arsenal of chemical weapons — has no moral right to blame other countries.”
