The prestigious 11th Airborne Division, newly christened from Alaskan troops, has come under fire after a leaked report found major issues within the division. The report, obtained by Reddit’s Army forum, cites racism, and heavy drinking amongst the many problems affecting service members in North America’s northernmost state.
The review, conducted by an army Cohesion Assistance Team (CAT), gathered surveys and intelligence from interviews with soldiers. The report found outdated facilities and equipment, low resources, and a heavy workload to be just some of the issues causing burnout among the troops.
Despite being commended for their initiative and performance in the harsh Alaskan terrain, soldiers within the division are also said to have experienced racist jokes and been exposed to toxic behavior. Shockingly, some 5% of interviewed service members claimed they experienced catcalling within the two weeks prior to the survey.
Adding to the issues faced by the troops, heavy drinking alcohol was also reported to cause problems, with one anonymous officer citing lack of leisure activities and the brutal Alaskan cold as possible factors encouraging alcohol abuse.
Despite recent positive efforts by the army to tackle suicide rates amongst soldiers, with resources dubbed Mission 100, there are concerns amongst experts that improvements could prove challenging to maintain.
The leaked report also comes amidst an assessment by the US Government Accountability Office which found poor conditions in barracks across the armed forces. Experts have highlighted the negative impact such conditions have on soldiers’ health and well-being.
