The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Mohammad Eslami, has accused Western governments of attempting to use the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to impose pressure on Iran.
Eslami specifically criticized the Western countries’ biased approach towards Iran and the use of sanctions to exert political pressure. Eslami made these statements during a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi in Vienna.
The Iranian official emphasized that “brutal political pressures exerted by Western countries on Iran will not bear fruit, and the Islamic Republic will not allow any politically-motivated pressure to go unanswered.” He urged Grossi to maintain an impartial and professional approach and to prevent Western states from using the IAEA’s reports as an excuse to impose more pressure on Iran.
Following the meeting, Grossi took to his social media platform to state that his meeting with Eslami was “important.” He added that the IAEA is committed to “engaging and making concrete progress” according to an agreement signed in Tehran in March “to provide credible assurances that Iran’s nuclear program is exclusively peaceful.”
