Algeria’s supreme security council decided on Wednesday to close Algerian airspace to all Moroccan civil and military aircraft, the Algerian presidency said.
The decision came “in view of the continued provocations and hostile practices on the Moroccan side,” it added in a statement.
Algeria severed diplomatic ties with its North African neighbor last month due to “hostile actions,” accusing Morocco of complicity in deadly forest fires that ravaged the country’s north.
In response, Morocco said it “regrets” Algeria’s “completely unjustified” decision.
Two days after cutting diplomatic ties, Algeria announced that all supplies of natural gas in Spain would be provided through its gas pipeline connecting the two countries, bypassing Morocco.
The normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and the Zionist entity— in return for an American recognition of Moroccan “sovereignty” over Western Sahara — has heightened tensions with Algeria, which supports the Palestinian cause.
