The seventeenth day of the 2006 July war was filled with dramatic events that consolidated the steadfastness of Lebanese Resistance and people in face of the Israeli brutality.
Hezbollah on Friday, July 28, 2006 fulfilled its promise to expand the range of rockets targeting occupied territories by firing missiles ‘beyond Haifa’.
The Lebanese Resistance group fired a new kind of rocket it called the Khaibar-1 which struck near the Israeli town of Afula, some 50 kms away from the Lebanese border. The rocket has a 100 kg warhead, which is significantly more powerful than the Katyusha rockets.
Meanwhile, the epic confrontations between Hezbollah fighters and occupation forces on the Lebanese border towns went ahead. Resistance fighters managed to ambush Israeli soldiers in Maroun Al-Ras border town and heavy losses were inflicted upon the Israeli invaders.
In Bint Jbeil town, Israeli soldiers were forced to withdraw after Hezbollah fighters attacked two Israeli battalions. Several soldiers were killed or injured as well as Merkava tanks were targeted in the clashes.
On the other hand, Israeli warplanes went ahead with their aggression on the residential areas in the south and Beirut’s southern suburb (Dahiyeh). The death toll of Israeli strikes on that day reached 17 civilians.
In the Zionist entity there had been some disagreements between military commanders who were questioning the Israeli reliance on air power as well as the ability of the occupation soldiers to withstand the fierce resistance they were meeting in the Lebanese border towns.
For their part, Hezbollah fighters sent a message to Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah, in which they pledged to go ahead with the resistance against the Israeli invaders.
“O’ our master, here we are. We are along the border with Palestine and across the south. We are your truthful promise, the freedom of Samir Al-Kuntar and all other prisoners. We are the lovers of Imam Hussein, the surprises and the coming victory Inshallah,” read the touching letter, which was broadcast via Al-Manar TV and Al-Nour Radio.
