Iran’s ambassador to Iraq Iraj Masjedi stressed that the Islamic Republic reserves the right to take revenge against the US for the assassination of Lt. General Qassem Suleimani, noting that such reprisal would not necessarily take place militarily.
“Revenge for the murder of Qasem Soleimani does not have to be military, as the withdrawal of the American forces from the region is tantamount to retaliation,” Masjedi told the Al Iraqiya broadcaster late on Monday.
The ambassador noted that Iran and Iraq have been cooperating in prosecuting those involved in the January assassination of Sulrimani and Abu Mahdi A-Muhandis in a US strike on Baghdad International Airport.
The Iranian diplomat reiterated, meanwhile, that his country has no hand in repeated attacks on the US embassy in the capital of Baghdad, noting that Tehran does not support such actions or intervenes in the internal affairs of Iraq.
“We have nothing to do with the bombing of the US embassy in Baghdad, and we do not back any side standing behind these attacks,” he was quoted as saying.
Tehran would not interfere in the internal affairs of Iraq or “impose its policies,” the ambassador highlighted, noting that the military escalation between Iran and the United States had decreased following Tehran’s response to the assassination of General Suleimani.
