Lebanese President Michel Aoun asked foreign minister to obtain the evidence and documents that prompted the US Treasury to impose sanctions against Head of Free Patriotic Movement Gebran Bassil.
Aoun asked caretaker Foreign Minister Charbel Wahba “to make the necessary contacts with the US embassy in Beirut and the Lebanese embassy in Washington, to obtain the evidence and documents which prompted the US Treasury to press charges and impose sanctions against” Bassil, Presidency Press office announced on Saturday.
President Aoun asserted that “this evidence should be handed over to the Lebanese judiciary in order to take the necessary legal measures,” the office added.
The Lebanese president pointed out that he will directly follow up on this case, leading to the necessary trials in the event that any data are available on these accusations.
The US Treasury on Friday slapped sanctions on Bassil, an ex-foreign minister, singling him out for what it said was his role in “corruption.”
Earlier on Friday, Wall Street Journal reported that the US Treasury would make such step, citing Bassil’s alliance and relation with Hezbollah.
