House Speaker Nabih Berri stressed on Saturday that Lebanon is afflicted and the procrastination of the presidential elections is exacerbating the socioeconomic situation.
In an interview with Al-Joumhouria newspaper, Speaker Berri affirmed that electing a new president has become a moral, humanitarian and national duty, adding that this pushed him to announce the nomination Head of Marada Movement Sleiman Franjiyeh.
Speaker Berri considered that this step would promote the other political parties to announce their nominations that will sustain the democratic rule, adding that he would call for an election session whenever the competition is secured.
Speaker Berri indicated that he held 11 sessions without reaching any result, adding that he will no longer convene the parliament if the session will be a farce.
Meanwhile, Speaker Berri noted that the legislative role of the parliament can never be deactivated, adding that some blocs’ abstention from attending the latest parliamentary session was in response to the convening of the council of ministers (Some parliamentary bloc consider that convening the caretaker government amid a presidential void violates the constitution).
