The Association of Banks of Lebanon (ABL) decided in a statement “to temporarily suspend its strike for a period of one week upon the request of Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and in view of the deteriorating economic situation.”
According to Al-Manar reporter, PM Mikati welcomed the Association’s delegation upon its request.
The reporter added that the Association announced after a short meeting with Mikati the suspension of the strike in order to “give a chance” for resolving the trouble that caused the strike.
The Association of Banks decided the strike in protest of the judicial move against some banks taken by Mount Lebanon Prosecutor Judge Ghada Aoun.
Aoun also dismissed the orders of Caretaker PM Najib Mikati who called on Interior Minister Bassam al-Mawlawi to take legal measures against her and accused the judge of refusing to receive recusal notices and usurping power.
The Higher Judiciary Council, for its part, called on Mikati to undo the decision pertaining judge Aoun, reiterating the principle of the separation of powers.
It is worth noting that the banks will reopen on Monday after a 3-week strike, which caused an unprecedented decrease in the national pound’s exchange rate against the US dollar on the black market.
