Britain faces a “fundamental threat to our sovereignty” from enemy states and terrorist groups including Russia and ISIL, the head of MI6 has warned in a rare speech on Europe’s deteriorating security situation.
In his first public comments since taking up the post of “C”, spy chief Alex Younger said the scale of the terror threat in the UK was “unprecedented”.
Describing ISIL as a “highly-organized jihadi” group, he said a dozen plots aimed at British targets had been disrupted in just the last three years.
And in a warning to fanatics still intent of waging war on the UK, he declared that MI6 would now “take the fight to the enemy”.
