Tehran to Washington: Fulfill First, Talk Later

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has firmly declared that any prospective agreement with the United States must be built upon mutual respect and reciprocal commitments, explicitly warning Washington that threats and unilateral pressure will not yield results.

In a post on X late Monday, Pezeshkian outlined Tehran’s conditional approach to diplomacy, stating, “Mutual understanding is a two-way street. If the American side adheres to the agreement, we will also fulfill our commitments.” Underscoring Iran’s defiant posture, he added that Tehran confronts “unreasonable saber-rattling and baseless threats” by leaning on rationality and human dignity in decision-making, while vowing to “defend decisively and fearlessly when it comes time to act.”

The president’s hardline stance comes amid ongoing efforts to implement a Pakistan- and Qatar-mediated Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which aims to halt the recent cycle of US-Israeli aggression and de-escalate simmering regional tensions. While Iranian officials have consistently signaled a readiness for serious diplomacy grounded in justice and equality, they have categorically rejected any form of coercion or hollow promises, maintaining that the Islamic Republic remains fully prepared to safeguard its sovereignty and national dignity with strength and resolve.

Reinforcing the president’s position, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei announced on Monday that technical negotiations with Washington will not proceed until the key terms of the bilateral 14-point MoU are fully implemented. Baghaei flatly dismissed reports of imminent consultations in Doha, asserting that Iran is not yet satisfied that the agreement’s provisions have been met.

The Iranian rebuttal directly counters claims circulating in US media and a recent post by President Donald Trump on Truth Social, which suggested that representatives from both sides were slated to meet in Doha on Tuesday to resolve outstanding differences—including contentious issues surrounding the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

With Tehran explicitly tying its compliance to Washington’s actions, the diplomatic ball now lies squarely in the US court. As Iran has demonstrated its seriousness regarding reciprocal commitments, the critical question remains whether the American administration is prepared to match that resolve with concrete follow-through.
