Berri: Framework Deal Is Dead on Arrival, as Israeli Agenda Threatens Syria and Arab States Alike

In a sweeping rejection of ongoing normalization overtures, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has declared that the framework agreement recently signed with ‘Israel’ is “impossible to ratify or implement,” characterizing the deal as a logical absurdity that stands in direct opposition to established Arab and international consensus.

In an exclusive interview with the Al-Modon website, Berri asserted that the agreement commands widespread opposition from both the Lebanese public and regional stakeholders, citing its inherent flaws and lack of viable execution mechanisms.

Berri notably praised the growing dissent against the accord, explicitly lauding the stance of former MP Walid Jumblatt, and observed that a definitive political climate is now crystallizing within Lebanon to rally against its passage.

Expanding his critique beyond Lebanon’s borders, Berri warned that the broader Israeli project poses an existential threat to the entire Arab region, rather than targeting Beirut in isolation. He urged the Lebanese government to urgently shore up its defensive posture by fortifying its position with robust backing from Arab, regional, and international powers. “The threat to Lebanon is inherently a threat to all Arab states,” he stated, emphasizing that the ongoing occupation of the south constitutes a direct danger not only to Lebanon but also to Syria’s national security.

The Speaker further said that all current Israeli maneuvers are calculated to incite internal discord either among Lebanon’s disparate factions or between Beirut and Damascus. He called on both Lebanese and Syrian leaders to transcend these provocations and resolutely avoid falling into any hostile traps. According to Berri, Tel Aviv is actively seeking to distance itself from a direct military confrontation to prevent incurring losses, aiming instead to redirect the battlefield inward by inflaming local tensions and pushing Lebanese communities into internecine conflict.
