Amid ongoing U.S. pressure on Lebanon and the resistance forces within it, the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on nine MPs and officials from Hezbollah and the Amal Movement for “obstructing the peace process in Lebanon and impeding the disarmament of Hezbollah.”
According to a statement from the U.S. Treasury Department, this action was taken today under the authority of what it claimed was “counterterrorism.”
The sanctions included the following individuals:
- Former Minister Mohamed Fanich
- MP Hassan Fadlallah
- MP Hussein Al-Hajj Hassan
- MP Ibrahim al-Moussawi
- Iran’s ambassador-designate to Lebanon, Mohammad Reza Sheibani
- Ahmad Asaad Baalbaki and Ali Ahmad Safawi, security officials in the Amal Movement
The statement also claimed that Hezbollah had received illicit support from within Lebanon’s legitimate security organizations, the Lebanese Armed Forces and the General Directorate of General Security. Thus,
- Brigadier General Khattar Nasser Eldin, Chief of the National Security Department in the General Directorate of General Security, and
- Colonel Samir Hamadi, Chief of the Dahiyah Branch of the Intelligence Directorate in the Lebanese Armed Forces
were added to the sanctions list.
