A new poll by The Washington Post, ABC News and Ipsos shows rising public dissatisfaction with Donald Trump, as Democrats open a wider lead in congressional support six months before the US midterm elections.
Trump’s overall approval stands at 37%, while disapproval has climbed to 62%—the highest level of his presidency. Public criticism is particularly sharp over his handling of the Iran war, with 66% disapproving, as well as the economy, where approval has dropped to 34% amid rising fuel prices and cost-of-living concerns.
As the poll, published on Sunday, indicates, “Americans broadly dissatisfied with Trump’s leadership” reflects a deepening political challenge for the administration.

The survey points to shifting momentum toward the Democratic Party, which now holds a five-point advantage over the Republican Party in voter preference for Congress, up from two points earlier this year.
The lead expands among likely voters, with Democrats significantly more energized ahead of November, as “Democrats are far more likely than Republicans to say voting this fall is more important than previous midterms.”
Despite maintaining strong backing within his Republican base, Trump’s support among independents has weakened, contributing to what analysts describe as “a deteriorating political climate” for Republicans. The trend raises concerns over the party’s narrow House majority and its prospects in the Senate.
The poll also shows Democrats gaining ground on economic trust—an area long dominated by Republicans—while the electorate remains deeply divided, with many Americans expressing little confidence in either party on key national issues.
