U.S. President Donald Trump admitted that the American military operation against Iran has taken longer than he expected.
Speaking yesterday evening in Dallas, Texas, during the Republican National Convention held ahead of the midterm congressional elections in November, he said: “We have built the strongest military in the world. We had to use our military for longer than I expected, but we cannot allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons.”
He added: “We control the Strait of Hormuz; I call it the Trump Strait.”
Trump indicated that he does not regret launching the war against Iran despite the potential impact of the conflict on the midterm elections.
In an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, when asked if he felt regret over the war due to its potential effect on the elections, Trump said: “I don’t believe in the word ‘regret.’ But you can always question yourself a little bit.”
He added: “If I had to do the exact same thing again, I would do exactly what I did.”
Trump rejected suggestions that some of his supporters are upset and disappointed because of the war. He said: “I don’t think they’re disappointed. I think they’re very proud of the fact that I’m not allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”
Trump reiterated his belief that the war will end as soon as the midterm elections are over, saying: “The war will end right after the election.”
Trump had made a similar statement on Wednesday, saying Tehran is trying to influence the elections that will determine whether his Republican Party retains control of Congress.
The rise in oil and gas prices due to the U.S.–Israeli war on Iran has become a primary issue for Republicans in the lead-up to the elections.
