Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi briefed the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Parliament) on the latest developments in Iran and the region, as well as understandings reached with the Sultanate of Oman, particularly those concerning the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s conditions for reopening the strategic waterway.
Ibrahim Azizi, chairman of Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said Araghchi attended the committee’s meeting and provided an update on ongoing developments and measures taken under the understanding between Iran and Oman, as well as developments related to the Strait of Hormuz.
Azizi said the issues raised during the meeting could provide an important basis for lawmakers currently examining the draft “Strategic Measure to Ensure the Security and Advancement of the Strait of Hormuz.” He stressed the need to reach a shared understanding on key issues, which would strengthen coordination between the legislative and executive branches in drafting and implementing legislation.
He added that lawmakers put a number of questions to the foreign minister during the meeting. While some were satisfied with the answers provided, others requested additional time to consider the responses. Azizi expressed hope that the meeting’s outcomes would help advance Iran’s national interests at this sensitive stage.
For his part, Araghchi said the Foreign Ministry and the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee maintain strong relations and effective coordination. He explained that he had presented lawmakers with a report on the latest developments, including the understanding with Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz, negotiations and moves by intermediary parties, and Iran’s conditions for reopening the strait.
According to Araghchi, the meeting also addressed the outcomes of the latest Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit and preparations for the upcoming BRICS summit, as well as relations with neighboring countries, bilateral ties, joint projects, and economic diplomacy.
Araghchi said lawmakers also raised questions about the Caspian Sea Convention following the recent referral of the related bill to Parliament, stressing that he had provided the necessary clarifications.
Regarding the draft “Strategic Measure to Ensure the Security and Advancement of the Strait of Hormuz,” Araghchi said the government’s position is, in principle, to cooperate with Parliament in decision-making and legislation in accordance with legal frameworks while providing technical assessments and specialized expertise.
He added that the government would place implementation of the legislation on its agenda once it is approved, noting that the future management of the Strait of Hormuz and related strategic issues are among the serious matters being discussed by Parliament, with the participation of Foreign Ministry experts and other government institutions.
Araghchi stressed that Tehran hopes these measures will ultimately safeguard Iran’s interests in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global trade and energy.
