Russia on Friday condemned the latest US-led coalition airstrike in Syria’s Tanf as an unacceptable attack that affects the political settlement process.
“Any military actions entailing the aggravation of the situation in Syria certainly influence the course of the political process, especially such actions that were committed against the Syrian armed forces,” Deputy Foreign Minister Gennadiy Gatilov said.
He noted that the potentially deadly coalition strike near the southern town of Tanf, announced on Thursday, is “absolutely unacceptable” and in “violation of Syria’s sovereignty.”
“This was not an operation against ISIL or Nusra Front,” Gatilov said.
Earlier on Thursday the US-led coalition announced it had bombed “pro-Syrian regime forces” near Tanf, a remote base in southern Syria near the Syria-Jordan-Iraq border.
A statement by the coalition said the Syrian forces “posed a threat to US and partner forces at Tanf.”
