China on Tuesday demanded that the United States immediately revoke sanctions imposed against Chinese officials or face reciprocal countermeasures from Beijing.
In a statement, Chinese Foreign Ministry considered Washington’s statement on the issue “full of ideological bias and political lies,” adding that the US is “discrediting China and suppressing Chinese officials for no reason.”
“What the United States has done violates international law and norms, and grossly interferes in China’s internal affairs,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told a regular news briefing according to Xinhua news agency.
The spokesman stressed in this context that China is firmly opposed to this.
Earlier on Tuesday, the US State Department announced it was imposing visa restrictions on Chinese officials in order to punish Beijing for so-called human rights violations.
China is “attempting to intimidate, harass, and repress dissidents and human rights defenders inside and outside,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, adding that “perpetrators of human rights abuses must continue to face consequences.”
