Lebanese Speaker urged Lebanese politicians to agree upon electoral law, warning against adopting the 1960 law in the coming polls.

In remarks published by Lebanese newspapers on Wednesday, Berri said that the joint parliamentary committees' meetings which are aimed at discussing election law did not yield any results yet.

Lebanese Speaker Nabih BerriThe Lebanese speaker told as-Safir daily that this issue will be brought up during the national dialogue meeting set for June 21, "so that everyone assumes their responsibilities."

“The joint committees' meetings reached a standstill. There is a waste of time, which is not innocent nor acceptable,” said the speaker, expressing belief that some lawmakers are deliberately trying to bring the 1960 law back into effect.

In this context, Berri warned against Lebanese people outrage in case the 1960 law was adopted.

He noted that he backs any step that that leads to the adoption of the proportional law, which “has become a national and pressing need.”

Meanwhile, Berri stressed that there should be accountability for all those who are implicated in the illegal internet networks case.

“I will never allow the covering up of this case in any circumstances or wasting away and obliterating facts,” Berri said.

"There needs to be accountability for all those implicated whoever they may be, because this is related to the security and money of the state as well as our sovereignty and legal integrity,” the speaker added.
