Lebanese MP Resigns over Results of Tripoli Municipal Elections

MP Robert Fadel resigned on Monday from the House of Representatives, over the results of Tripoli municipal elections.

The list, which was backed by the resigned minister Ashraf Rifi and won the local elections in the northern city, excluded the Christian and Alawite components that the contribute to the political life in Tripoli.

Fadel said in a statement that he does not accept to be happy at the expense of Lebanese people misery.

"When I decided to get involved in public affairs and politics, I promised to devote myself and not deviate from this purpose no matter what the challenges, difficulties, or temptations were," the statement added.

"I took part in the formation of a coalition list in the last municipal elections, a move stemming from my fear that the fierce political battle will lead to the collapse of all components representation in the fabric of our society."

"But the battle revealed its dust, it removed or even marginalized more than an essential component in the new municipal council," Fadel said in his statement.

The MP then enumerated a number of development and poverty problems that were treated with indifference.

He concluded by announcing his resignation.
