Shaky Ceasefire Holds in Ain Al-Hilweh Camp

Despite sporadic gunfire in Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee camp in the South, the situation remained under control Saturday as the joint Palestinian elite force prepared to deploy heavily at the camp.

armyA security source told The Daily Star that two members from the Palestinian forces were wounded at dawn as their unit came under fire as they readied to deploy in al-Safsaf neighborhood of the Ain al-Hilweh camp. The forces had been set to position in Safsaf and four other neighborhoods, including the rival Al-Barkasat street.

The fighting broke out Friday night over a personal dispute between two men from the Barkasat neighborhood and a few others from the camp’s Safsaf neighborhood. It soon escalated into fighting between rival political factions.

Hussein Othman from the Fatah Movement was killed, while Mohammad Shreidi and Mohammad Talaat were wounded in the violence.

Intermittent gunfire renewed at 8:00 a.m. Saturday with gunshots reaching the adjacent Taamir neighborhood, forcing residents to remain indoors, the newspaper said.
